I once was doing a project estimate on a job. I was tasked to oversee an upgrade to the entire way the company did business (legal compliance) and I was responsible for 80 percent of the company's business (just me-they had a team of 10 doing the other 20 percent). We're talking BILLIONS of dollars worth of business here. They wanted us to be done in 6 months! They made me do the schedule (among other things I'm a PM). I looked at the work load, staffing, production dates, and the rest of it and the real time was going to be 18 months. That's what I submitted. With ALL of the proof.
They re-wrote it to six months.
I wouldn't sign it and quit not that long afterwards.
That was already factored into the effort estimate.
